The European Union is going to deliver the Sakharov Prize to Laurent Saleh as one of the representatives of the Venezuelan oposition with recognized ties to Colombian paramilitary groups. This is paradoxical, given that the Sakharov Prize is meant for people fighting for democracy, freedom of expression and thought. The Colombian paramilitaries have been internationally condemned for crimes against humanity, hindering democracy and violating freedom of expression.
